Making Dance Accessible, Expressive & Personal
My Dance Odyssey: From Childhood Wonder to Artistic Mastery

From the moment my tiny feet first tapped the polished studio floor, I knew dance would become the compass guiding my life. I’m Sreeparna Biswas, and my journey began at age five under the gentle tutelage of my Odissi guru. Those early lessons in body alignment, mudra precision, and narrative expression awakened a profound connection to the art form’s centuries-old traditions. As I grew, my curiosity and restless creative spirit naturally gravitated toward exploring new genres, each adding fresh layers of colour to my artistic palette.
Rooted in Odissi: Where Technique Meets Soul
Odissi’s hallmark — its fluid torso movements paired with intricate footwork — taught me the delicate balance between strength and grace. Beyond mastering the tribhangi posture or the rhythmic patterns of the pallavi, I discovered that Odissi is, at its heart, a conversation between dancer and deity, storyteller and audience. This discipline instilled in me not just technical prowess but an appreciation for dance as a vessel of deep cultural narratives and emotional resonance.
Broadening Horizons: Embracing Rabindra Nrittya & Folk Heritage
While Odissi formed the bedrock of my practice, I soon found myself drawn to the poetic movements of Rabindra Nrittya. Through Tagore’s compositions, I learned to embody lyrics and melody, weaving literary depth into my choreography. Simultaneously, delving into India’s diverse folk traditions — from the vigorous beats of Chau or Bihu to the lyrical storytelling of Jhumur — reminded me that dance thrives in community life, festivals, and ritual. Each regional style taught me new ways to connect, reinforcing that dance truly belongs to the people.
Bollywood & Hip Hop: Infusing Contemporary Energy
To remain relevant and engaging in today’s eclectic cultural landscape, I ventured into Bollywood’s vibrant theatrics and hip hop’s raw dynamism. Bollywood offered me lessons in exuberant storytelling — how a single hand gesture or eyebrow raise can electrify an audience. Hip hop’s street-born innovations, from popping to breaking, challenged me to push my body into new realms of rhythm and improvisation. By fusing these contemporary elements with classical foundations, I craft choreographies that resonate with both traditionalists and modern enthusiasts.
Academic Pursuits: Sharpening Craft at Rabindra Bharati University
To refine my technique and fuel my creative ambitions, I pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Dance at Rabindra Bharati University, specialising in Odissi. Here, my academic coursework spanned dance history, anatomy, musicology, and performance theory, providing a holistic framework to ground my artistry. Rigorous studio hours cemented my technical vocabulary, while research projects on regional dance forms and improvisational methods widened my choreographic toolkit.
Career Milestones: Stages, Screens & Stellar Collaborations
Prestigious Cultural Festivals
Over the years, I’ve graced major Indian cultural festivals — from the Konark Dance Festival under moonlit skies to contemporary showcases at urban art spaces. Each stage taught me adaptability: performing outdoors under shifting weather, engaging diverse audiences, and translating intimate classroom discipline into grand, communal spectacles.
Collaborating with Arijit Singh
Working alongside playback sensation Arijit Singh remains a highlight of my career. Translating his soul-stirring vocals into physical expression demanded acute musicality and emotive nuance. Together, we created performances where every note found its reflection in my dancers’ gestures — a true synergy of voice and movement.
Experimental Projects & Community Flash Mobs
My repertoire extends beyond conventional theatre. I’ve choreographed experimental dance films blending live action with digital art, and organised community flash mobs in public spaces to break down barriers between performer and passerby.
Guiding Stars: My Teaching Philosophy
-
Accessibility for All Levels — Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced student, I break down complex movements into digestible modules. Clear verbal cues, step-by-step demonstrations, and personalised feedback ensure that every learner finds confidence and joy.
-
Fostering Emotional Expression — Technique is the vessel, but emotion is its cargo. I encourage students to connect with the story behind every mudra and lyric, guiding them to channel their own experiences into the choreography.
-
Building a Supportive Community — My classes are creative incubators where dancers uplift one another, exchange constructive critiques, and celebrate successes. This inclusive environment nurtures growth, meaningful friendships, and collective inspiration.
My Mission: Dance as a Catalyst for Transformation
-
Empowering Individual Voices — Every dancer has a unique story. My goal is to help you discover and articulate that story through movement — whether it’s a classical Odissi piece or a high-octane hip hop routine.
-
Cultivating Confidence On & Off Stage — Mastering choreography builds discipline and poise, qualities that transcend the studio and empower you in everyday life.
-
Expanding Reach Through Workshops & Digital Platforms — To make dance truly inclusive, I regularly conduct specialised workshops for schools, corporate teams, and community organisations.
