Susmita’s Journey
Dance did not arrive gently in Susmita Maity’s life — it arrived with the full weight of a classical tradition and demanded everything from her. Over more than 15 years of rigorous practice, she has built a command of Bharatanatyam that goes well beyond technical precision. It is a living knowledge, shaped through countless hours of rehearsal, stage performance, and an unwavering love for the art form she has chosen to carry forward.
Her training is deeply rooted in the classical framework of Bharatanatyam — the intricate footwork (tatkar), expressive abhinaya, rhythmic layering, and storytelling that make this form one of India’s most complete dance disciplines. But Susmita has never seen classical training as a ceiling.
Beyond Classical Boundaries
Expanding her movement vocabulary, Susmita has trained in Rabindra Nritya — the lyrical dance tradition rooted in Rabindranath Tagore’s songs and poetry — and Indian folk dance, which adds earthy vitality and regional cultural depth to her creative repertoire. She has also trained in Creative Dance in the Uday Shankar style, the Indian contemporary tradition that blends classical Indian vocabulary with expressive modern movement.
This diverse training allows Susmita to create original choreography that weaves classical elegance with fresh creativity — a thoughtful balance between honouring tradition and embracing artistic innovation that defines the spirit of dance at Twist N Turns.
Teaching at Twist N Turns
Susmita’s classroom is built on a simple conviction: dance is communication. Her teaching goes far beyond steps and technique. She places equal emphasis on expression, musicality, and storytelling — developing students who not only execute movement correctly, but who understand what that movement is saying.
Whether a student is discovering Bharatanatyam for the very first time or is an experienced dancer who wants to deepen their artistry, Susmita meets them exactly where they are. Her teaching environment is warm, structured, and encouraging — a space where every student feels seen and motivated to grow.
