Papiya’s Journey — Rooted in Kathak

Papiya Saha started dancing at the age of six — not with Bollywood or street styles, but with the ancient classical language of Kathak. For over 15 years, she deepened that practice: learning the intricate footwork (tatkar), expressive storytelling (abhinaya), and rhythmic precision that define one of India’s oldest dance traditions.

That classical foundation is not background history — it is the invisible architecture beneath everything she teaches. The rhythm in her Bollywood choreography, the grace in her transitions, the weight and intention in her movement — all of it traces back to those years of Kathak.

The Contemporary Turning Point — Training with Satyaki Das

In 2019, Papiya expanded her artistic horizons significantly, training in Contemporary dance under the mentorship of Satyaki Das — a celebrated dancer and former member of the Twist N Turns community.

That experience was transformative. Contemporary dance opened her relationship with movement: less about set vocabulary, more about expression, weight, grounding, and the full emotional range of the body. The qualities she developed in those sessions — storytelling through movement, genuine expressiveness — flow directly into her teaching today.

Teaching at Twist N Turns — Adults and Children

Papiya brings a different quality of presence to two very different types of classes at Twist N Turns.

For adults: Her Bollywood classes are expressive, deeply musical, and technically grounded. Students develop not just choreography but a relationship with movement — the kind that shows on stage and in the mirror.

For children: Papiya’s kids’ sessions are nurturing, structured, and intentionally joyful. She understands that the first experience a child has with dance shapes their relationship with it for years. Her approach builds coordination, confidence, and above all a genuine love for moving — the foundation that makes long-term learning possible.

A Well-Rounded Style Repertoire

Beyond Bollywood and kids’ dance, Papiya’s training spans:

  • Creative Movement — expressive, imaginative movement particularly effective with young children
  • Bollyhop — the Bollywood–Hip-Hop fusion style
  • Freestyle — personal expression across forms
  • Semi-Classical — the bridge between Indian classical and commercial dance

This breadth makes Papiya one of the most adaptable instructors in the Twist N Turns faculty — equally at home with toddlers, adult beginners, and more advanced students across multiple forms.
