Sagar’s Story

Sagar Halder’s relationship with dance started the way it does for many: a school cultural event, a moment on a stage, and the sudden awareness that this thing — movement to music in front of people — was exactly where he was supposed to be.

What set him apart from that point was how he built. There was no institution with a set curriculum guiding his path. Sagar learned from choreographies, street battles, online culture, and his own relentless exploration. Hip Hop and House were his primary languages, and he taught them to himself through years of practice and trial.

The pivotal shift came when he began training under Sambo Mukherjee, one of the respected names in India’s House dance community. Sambo did not just pass on footwork and timing — he opened up House as a culture, with its own history, its own ethos, and its own standards. That understanding transformed how Sagar saw movement: not as a sequence of steps, but as an act of communication.

Building the Craft — Workshops, Camps, and Global Exposure

To deepen his practice, Sagar has actively sought out national and international workshops, camps, and sessions with respected faculty across disciplines. These experiences brought him into contact with street styles from different parts of the world, diverse techniques, and choreographers whose approaches challenged his own.

The result is a movement vocabulary that is simultaneously rooted and broad — someone who contributes to the conversation rather than simply following what is already there.

On the Floor — Teaching at Twist N Turns

Sagar’s choreography is his signature: not bound by genre, drawing from street dance, cultural rhythms, freestyle flows, and traditional motifs to create something that feels both raw and refined. He makes choreographies that express who he is — not just what he can do.

In the studio, he brings that same commitment to honesty. He teaches Hip Hop and House with respect for what these forms actually are — their origins, their culture, their standards — while making them accessible and alive for every student in the room. He is patient, observant, and genuinely invested in each dancer’s development.

For Sagar, the discipline is the point: staying truthful to the roots of the form, and watering it with honesty, compassion, and dignity.
